The Yugoslaw Wars led to drastic alterations, i.e. the destruction of infrastructure which disrupted both internal and external economic links and led to a transformation from a flourishing country to a country with few production capacities. When it comes to the Bosnian economy, it emerges that it continues to face major difficulties, leading to high unemployment and low incomes. For Dzemal, father of three children, it has become more profitable to work in Germany for a few weeks than to strive in his own country.
"We have a lot of rooms we could rent out. Whenever I have the financial means, I renovate my house to meet today's requirements. I also invest my spare time to maintain and expand the farmyard. The goats are pregnant and offer meat and milk, plus all year round we are able to feed on potatoes and cabbage from our own fields. And soon, when it gets warmer, the chickens will lay more eggs again."
